Assistant referee who allowed Liverpool’s goal to stand against West Ham ‘given the weekend off’

Simon Beck didn’t have the greatest night on Monday.

The assistant referee was responsible for allowing Liverpool’s goal to stand against West Ham after he failed to see James Milner standing yards offside right in front of him.

And it seemed as though that error affected him for the rest of the match.

Later in the first half, Beck flagged Mohamed Salah offside when replays showed he was clearly onside.

In truth, it was a shocking 45-minute performance from Beck.

Luckily for him, West Ham equalised before half-time and managed to grab a point from the match.

While Beck’s mistake wasn’t match-decided in the end, he’s still paid the price for it.

That’s because, according to the Mirror, he has been giving the weekend off.

Beck has been axed from this weekend’s matches for his gaffe and, according to a source, he been “given the weekend to go shopping.”

We advise him not to go shopping at Westfield Stratford, though…

After the match, West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini was understandably rather disappointed.

“I don’t include the referee because it was the linesman’s mistake. For the first goal [Milner] was one and a half metres offside but if you see the linesman he was watching the ball, not the line.”

The PGMOL have now sympathised with Pellegrini and duly punished Beck for his display.

Incidentally, Liverpool almost benefited from another assistant referee mistake in injury-time when Matthew Wilkes didn’t spot Divock Origi in an offside position from Naby Keita’s pass.

Origi saw his shot saved with virtually the last kick of the game but Pellegrini was left fuming that he even had the opportunity to score.

“The last play of the game, you can see the linesman is up with the line of play. It is difficult to see why he didn’t raise his flag,” Pellegrini said.
